Hans Fernan is part of a young generation of lifeguards who are working to professionalize beach lifeguarding and raise its status to the level of municipal fire and police departments. Lifeguards like Hans need a number of skills to fulfill their work duties; he is a college graduate, badged peace officer, EMT, boating expert, public relations liaison, budget manager and he's trained in cliff, swift water, helicopter and SCUBA search and rescue.
