Exhibition I: Portrait images // documentation Jacklyn Zolokere is one tiny node in the network of villages that dot the floor of the Hewe valley in Malawi, Africa. As the daughter of the highest traditional authority in the village, Jacklyn Khunga is expected to be the torchbearer of traditional values. But rather than live quietly as a wife and mother, Jacklyn rails against tradition and speaks openly about women's rights, her HIV status and she has refused a marriage that requires a dowry. As a consequence, people like her father talk about her dismissively, "Ah that one, she is like a man. She has never married properly. She always takes someone from outside and he must be beneath her..." The bicycle Jacklyn is on is a ubiquitous object in Malawi - it is the primary mode of transport for many people. Jacklyn borrows this one to visit people living in the outlying area who are suffering from HIV/AIDS and to council those who aren't. Cy Kuckenbaker previous // next |
